Global Studio
Johannesburg 2007
Elena Pascolo (Architectural Association) together with Laura Kurgan of the Spatial Information Design Lab (Columbia University, Graduate School) were unit tutors at the Global Studio international conference and workshop held in Johannesburg in 2007.
Through extensive mapping and immersion into the social and spatial conditions of an area in downtown Johannesburg, the group structured an alternative transformation agenda and strategy for an area facing rapid gentrification. This incorporated new forms of civic and productive spaces, the adaptive reuse of existing warehouses and the use of co-opertive investment strategies to generate platforms for employment for the urban poor.
