This publication documents the work undertaken on a fieldtrip to the Favelas of Rio Janeiro, by the Housing and Urbanism Graduate Programme of the Architectural Association.

A series of essays reflect on the role of design in responding to the significant challenges facing the city and makes a call to reinstate an active engagement by architects and urbanists in reshaping the relationship between the formal//informal city in order to consider strategies of exchange that supports a city of integrity and integration.
