The Food Exchange, London Festival of Architecture 2008

Location: Smithfield, London

The Food Exchange – a series of participatory projects and live installations by students at London Metropolitan University, with tutor Alex Warnock-Smith - were staged in the London Festival of Architecture Student Festival 2008. The installations were created after a period of active research in which the students engaged directly with the people who live and work in Smithfield by becoming market cleaners, butchers, delivery men, waiters and coffee shop workers. The projects, which included an out-door film screening, an on-site soap making factory, a temporary soup kitchen and a public guerrilla al fresco dinner party, explored the unique spatial character of Smithfield and speculated on its uncertain future.

‘Made from Smithfield’, by Chris Fulford, Dan Sanders and Kenneth Murphy, was awarded LFA ‘Best Project’ in the category ‘Re-Use’.
