Nangang

Location: Taipei

Client: The Architectural Association, with the National Chiao-Tung University Taiwan

UPB developed urban-design schemes with students from the AA and NCTU exploring methods of urbanising innovation in the Nangang district of Taipei. Within the context of planned large-scale developments in the Nangang region – including the Taipei Pop Music Centre and a high-speed railway station – and the migration of high-tech design industries into the district, we were concerned about the disconnection of these developments from the surrounding residential fabric and the potentially negative effects of these new industries on the local economy and culture.

With this in mind, we developed an integrated spatial strategy to create physical, social and economic connections between the large-scale developments, and inserted an intermediate scale of shared public services and civic facilities. We also proposed a series of spatial, institutional and regulatory rules for the future developments.
